NEWPORT BEACH OKAZAKI FRIENDSHIP
NBSCA welcomed a delegation from Okazaki, Japan on October 12th, 2014 to celebrate together the 30th Anniversary of Sister Cities.  Mayor Uchida, Mrs. Uchida, Council Members and many friends from Okazaki visited Newport Beach.  In honor of our many years of friendship a statue of shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu was unveiled at a special ceremony at the Newport Beach Central Library on October 14th.

Since 1984, the Newport Beach Sister City Association, in conjunction with the Newport-Balboa Rotary Club, has selected six to seven middle school students to travel to Okazaki for a ten-day visit in July.  In October these same students host their Japanese friends here in Newport Beach.

Okazaki Castle

Okazaki is located in the coastal plains of southeastern Aichi Prefecture in Japan.  About 60% of the city area is forested and remains sparsely populated.  It is located approximately 250 miles southwest of Tokyo.

Okazaki is the birthplace of the first Shogun, Ieyasu Tokugawa and is best known for its production of stonework, miso, fireworks and centers for automobile, chemical and textile industries.  It was proclaimed a city on July 1, 1916,  Subsequently in 1944 and 1945, the city suffered extensive damage from two separate earthquakes.  More tragedy came with the bombings during World War II which destroyed most of the city center and killed over 200 people.

OKAZAKI

The population of Okazaki is approximately 370,000 and consists of about 150 square miles.  Main highlights include lovely parks, Okazaki Castle, large number of museums including one dedicated to Picasso, who spent considerable time here, and a number of intriguing shrines. 


Okazaki has nine colleges / universities and is the home of world known manufacturers like Toyota Motors, Sony Mitsubishi, and Makita Power Tools.
